More Reiki Q & A
Is this some kind of woo woo shit?
It’s a whole lot less woo woo than thinking something from a bottle is going to fix your life. (Spoiler Alert: That stuff usually ends up making your life much worse.) Is Reiki unconventional? Yes. But if your conventional stuff isn’t totally doing it for you, you might want to try something a bit different. Research is showing that Reiki can be beneficial for people experiencing depression, anxiety, pain, and sleep issues. And Reiki can complement any medical treatments you’re currently receiving.
Disclaimer: I have been called a witch before. I would never claim the title of “wise woman” myself, but when you touch an MMA fighter and his pain gets better, people start having ideas about you. It wasn’t magic - it was energy - but energy is kind of miraculous!
Is this going in my medical record?
I legally can not diagnose you with anything so there will be no ICD codes attached to your record after you see me. This is not a medical treatment. I do keep records and abide by HIPPA-level privacy, but they are not shared with anyone and other practitioners can not access them. I do not answer to your boss, the VA, or your medical insurance. So, whatever comes up is between us.
Another Disclaimer: If you tell me you’re ready to hurt yourself or someone else when you leave my office (and if you are, then please tell me), I’ll make sure you get the opportunity to hang out with some awesome first responders.
Otherwise, our work stays between us.
If you want me to collaborate with your medical support team, let me know and we can discuss that option.
Do I have to talk about my problems?
No. You can. But you don’t have to. Reiki is energetic. It doesn’t require you to rehash whatever you’re struggling with. I’m not a therapist.
But I do have ears to listen if you want to talk. I’d be happy to join you in your darkness until you’re ready to begin living in the light again. (P.S. - It’s OK to not be ready to be living in the light - that shit takes a level of energy that you might not be up for just yet.)
What will we talk about?
At the beginning, I will ask you if you have any goals or intentions for the session. We can create a goal together if you’re not sure. When we’re done, I’ll ask you how you are and if anything came up for you during the session that you’d like to discuss. If you’re up for it, we can also talk about homework.
Are you going to touch me?
I can do a whole treatment and be in a completely different location than my client. So no, Reiki doesn’t require touch.
One of the benefits of an in-person session is a physical connection.
Places on your body I might touch: head, shoulders, back, chest (men), abdomen, hips, knees, legs, feet, arms, hands.
Places I’ll hover over without touching: eyes, throat, chest (women), and anywhere you tell me not to touch.
Places I won’t go near: places that would be covered by a swim suit and anywhere you don’t want me to get near.
If your private parts need healing, the energy will have to travel from me touching a different part of your body. You can tell me you’re having trouble with a certain area. I can totally work with that from a distance.
Third Disclaimer: If you ask me to touch your private parts, I’ll kick your ass out of my office without a refund.
You don’t like laying face down or face up? No problem. You get to choose how you’re most comfortable.
You don’t like being touched in a certain spot or at all? No problem. I’ll hover my hands over the area or work on it from a distance.
All that’s required is communication.
Does the warm feeling in my hands feel amazing over your temples? Tell me and I can stay there longer.
Does me touching your knees start to freak you out? Just say the word and we’ll switch things up.
Does the energy work near an old wound bring shit up? If so, you might have the sudden urge to talk about it, start yawning a lot, stretch, cry, or want to take a break. All good. I’ll ask if you’re OK and if you want to keep going or take a moment. Just let me know what you need.
Or let me know if you don’t know what you need - I can work with that too.
How are you different than other Reiki practitioners?
First, I’m not afraid of your shit and I’m not all about love and light and peace. Would it be ideal for the world? Yes. But that’s not the world we currently live in. I am able to see the benefits in darkness. What benefits? Often, the more darkness you’ve come through, the more powerful your light is. And if you’re a warrior, you may still be under attack and not even know it. So I’d like to support you as you strengthen your body, mind, emotions, and spirit so you can continue to be the warrior your country needs right now (even if it is a spiritual war and not a physical one). Talking about all that is not required but I’m telling you now because it’s part of why I do what I do.
Second, I continue your care (in a more general way than in your session) by sending you Reiki energy for 28 days after your most recent session. I’m not sure if anyone else does extended care like that.
Third, I have a pay-it-forward/give-back type of thing where someone scan sponsor a session for a combat vet or that vet’s service dog. Learn more about that program by clicking the link below. If you're a combat vet and would like a sponsored session, you can sign up for the wait list on that same page.

What can Reiki do for me?
Officially: Reiki can help you relax. It is well understood that a relaxed state is essential for healing to occur. And again, research is showing that Reiki can be beneficial for people experiencing depression, anxiety, pain, and sleep issues.
However, people who have experienced head trauma or who have an overload of life/death/pain/fear experiences can struggle with the conventional treatment they are offered. Often, the treatment is initially so focused on helping with the relaxation/sleep aspect that it is difficult to actually get to the healing part. If Reiki can help you get to the point where you can heal enough to be able to relax then perhaps you can relax enough to be able to heal. Also, there is a spiritual aspect that is not typically covered in conventional treatment. Am I going to throw my spirituality on you? No. But if you want to talk, we can talk.
Speaking of spirituality…
The motivations I have behind what I do are spiritual. This is my spiritual work. I will take a moment to say a prayer while you are in the room. But we don’t need to talk about it at all.
HOWEVER, if you are receiving a sponsored session, we (both of us, together) will take a moment to send a prayer and Reiki energy to the unnamed person who sponsored your session so that there can be a proper energetic exchange. They paid for your session and you send them gratitude and good energy. If that’s not OK with you then make sure to bring your wallet and I’ll save that sponsored session for someone else.
What should I wear?
You can wear your regular clothes. You’ll take off your shoes so clean socks are appreciated. I don’t mind touching clean bare feet if you decide to take off your shoes and socks. You’ll keep on your shirt and pants/shorts. Just dress comfortably and make sure your bathing suit areas are completely covered. (Yeah, I had a bad experience once…)
Can I smoke before I come in?
I’m sensitive to cigarette smoke. If you come in smelling like smoke I will not be able to relax because it’ll make me feel gross and then the energy won’t flow so well and your treatment might suck. To prevent this, please schedule your appointment so you can take a shower and get fresh, smoke-free clothes between smoking and having your session. (Hint: If you smoke in your home, your clothing will sell like it.) Don’t come in drunk or high either - just for obvious reasons.
Can I bring my EDC?
Please abide by the local laws. I want you to feel safe but please take my safety into account as well. If you have been known to wake up in a disoriented state it’s best if you keep all EDC’s in your car. While I’m not afraid of your shit, we’ve got to be smart about keeping everyone safe - especially if you’re having struggles with staying in the present moment. Don’t keep tools on your person. If you have a tools that you can not part with, you may bring them in a locked box that we can keep in the cabinet during your session. That way you will have your tools in the room with you but I will not have my hands hovering nearby.
Yes, I know that a tool in a locked box or the car is useless in the case of an active shooter or something like that. (However, our room is in a semi-strategic position. Unless it’s a targeted attack, we’ll have time to respond. If that’s a concern for you, we can discuss our strategy before we begin our session.)
Is this going to turn me into a “hippie”?
Nobody has ever asked me this question but it came up on an interview between Shawn Ryan and Tom Spooner.
The answer is: I certainly hope not. Please don’t become someone who sings about peace and then spews hatred at good men. However, if you want to dress in linen, move to South America, and talk about God - best wishes to you!
More than likely, it will help you move toward connecting or reconnecting with the best, strongest, most powerful version of yourself. Reiki will not make that happen - it will only open the door. You have to walk through.
Will one Reiki session solve all my problems?
No. But it might get you one step closer to you solving your own problems. I’d be honored to walk with you on that path during our time together.
